Travel Tips
General Information
Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON) as currency. ATMs are widely available in cities and towns. Most places accept credit cards, but it's good to have some cash for smaller establishments.
While many Romanians speak English, especially in tourist areas and among younger people, learning a few basic Romanian phrases can be appreciated.
Romania is generally safe for tourists. The tap water is safe to drink in most urban areas, but bottled water is widely available.
Beach Getaways
Romania's Black Sea coast offers beautiful beaches with golden sand. Mamaia, near Constanța, is the most popular resort with vibrant nightlife and wide beaches.
For a quieter experience, visit Vama Veche in the south - originally a bohemian village that still maintains some of its free-spirited charm.
The beach season runs from June to September, with July and August being the warmest months.
Mountain Adventures
The Carpathian Mountains offer breathtaking landscapes, hiking trails, and wildlife. Transylvania's mountains are home to medieval castles, including the famous Bran Castle.
For hiking enthusiasts, Bucegi Mountains provide spectacular views and the mysterious Sphinx and Babele natural rock formations.
Sinaia, a mountain resort known as "The Pearl of the Carpathians," features the stunning Peleș Castle, the former summer residence of Romanian royalty.
Danube Delta
The Danube Delta is Europe's second-largest and best-preserved delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site with incredible biodiversity. It's home to over 300 species of birds and numerous fish species.
Tulcea serves as the gateway to the Delta. From there, you can take boat tours to explore the channels, lakes, and villages.
The best times to visit are late spring and early autumn when the weather is pleasant and the mosquitoes are less bothersome.
Cultural Attractions
Bucharest, the capital, blends Belle Époque buildings with communist-era architecture. Don't miss the Palace of Parliament, the second-largest administrative building in the world.
Sibiu and Sighișoara offer well-preserved medieval centers, while the painted monasteries of Bucovina showcase unique Byzantine frescoes.
Romanian folk traditions are still alive in rural villages, particularly in Maramureș with its wooden churches and ornate gates.
